These first photos are from a Peterson Family Reunion held in 1959.  As this was the year Sam and I were married, it evidently was not on our calendar to attend.  Someone did share with me a few photos from that day, so I have included them here.

My Aunt Mary's family:  Reid & Mary Tippetts with Lee Tippett's wife and three children.  His wife was from South America and didn't seem to adjust to living in the rural Delta, Utah area; they divorced.  Lee remarried Marcia, and they still live in Delta.

My Uncle Elwyn enjoyed singing and playing a guitar.

Home of my Peterson grandparents in Smithfield, Utah, where my mother grew up, which is how I remembered it when we visited my Grandfather John H. Peterson.

Remembering Laura Morgan's 100th Birthday - 2011

It seemed appropriate to follow my two previous posts about Sam's Aunt Laura to revisit and remember celebrating her 100th birthday (March  2) on April 9, 2011 in the American Legion Hall in Philip, South Dakota.  Many friends joined family members to celebrate the occasion.

Our gift to Laura was this framed picture Beth made of Laura's parents in the center and her paternal Rossiter grandparents on the left with her maternal Sutter grandparents on the right.  It was easy to see Laura was very pleased.

We also gave Laura a framed picture of herself taken in 1931 when she was at Spearfish Normal to get a teaching degree (now Black Hills State University).  She enjoyed teaching, but gave it up to marry Homer Morgan, a farmer, in 1932.

I had also given Laura a copy of Sam's mother's life story, which had a lot of Laura's life story as well.

Mabel was two years older than Laura. Their parents were immigrants who met in Pierre, SD when they came to the United States as young adults.  Their father was from England, and their mother was from Switzerland.  Laura described herself as having been her dad's helper in the fields while Mabel was their mom's helper in the house.  The two girls always remained very close, and after marriage their two families enjoyed being together.

We have nice memories of being with Aunt Laura's family in 2009 at Billy and Connie's farm near Milesville, SD celebrating Laura's 98th birthday.

The oldest son, Paul "Al" Allen Morgan born April 1, 1933, died March 21, 2007.  His wife Lorraine (Lori) preceded him in death, and he had remarried Alice Latham Morgan.

In Loving Memory of Laura Morgan

of Philip, South Dakota, died on Tuesday, May 28, 2013, at her son's home in Billings, Montana at the age of 102.

Laura Elizabeth Rossiter was born March 2, 1911, at West Fork, South Dakota, the daughter of Samuel and Bertha (Sutter) Rossiter. She grew up and attended rural school in the Milesville area, including first grade at the Chief Hump Rural School.

After high school, she attended Spearfish Normal School for one year and came back and taught rural school in the Ottumwa area.
Laura was united in marriage to Homer Morgan on June 10, 1932, in Philip. They moved to his dad's homestead one mile east and ¼ mile north of Milesville. In 1951, they moved into Philip where their children attended school.

Homer passed away in 1980. Laura continued to reside in Philip until moving to Billings, Montana in November 2011.

Laura enjoyed reading and especially spending time with her family.
Survivors include five sons Gerald Glen Morgan and his wife Gladys of Rapid City, Philip Dale Morgan and his wife Nanette of Billings, Montana, Edward Samuel Morgan and his wife Bonnie of Miller, Kent Homer Morgan and his wife Twila of Billings, and Keith Lauren Morgan and his wife Norlene of Billings; two daughters Connie Mae Parsons and her husband Bill of Milesville, and Kyle Elaine Taylor of Gillette, Wyoming; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Laura was preceded in death by her husband Homer; her son Paul Allen Morgan; a great-grandson Kirk Michael Parsons; a sister Mabel Ireland; two daughters-in-law Mary Morgan and Lorraine Morgan; and one son-in-law Fred Taylor.

Visitation was held 4-6 p.m. Friday, May 31, at the Rush Funeral Home in Philip.  Funeral services held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 1, at the United Church in Philip, with Pastor Kathy Chesney officiating.

 Gramma Ireland and her sister Laura were always very close.  They were the only children of Sam and Bertha Rossiter.  

Mabel was born July 24, 1909; died May 2000 (age 91)

Laura was born March 2, 1911; died May 28, 2013 (age 102)

Gramma Mabel and Aunt Laura by what remains of the homestead where they lived with their parents on Milesville Flats.

This is the area where Gramma Mabel got bitten by a rattlesnake when she was a little girl.  They put a tourniquet on the bite before driving many miles to the doctor; but when the tourniquet was removed, the poison was also dangerously released.  Now it is not recommended to use a tourniquet, but then its use may have stemmed from misinterpreting the common practice of employing a compression to the bitten limb via a bandage.
